Religious Extrimism

Posted in Uncategorized by K P Ramachandran on December 26, 2015

While seeing the religious intolerance all over the world I remember the famous film song written by Vayalar Ramavarma in 1972 which won the national award that year. The meaning of the first stanza will be some what like this :

” Man created religions ; Religions created Gods ;  Man , religions and Gods divided the land and the Mind . “

Even though this was scripted four decades before , this has become very much relevant today. Even in spite of the advancements in science and technology many people around the world are still superstitious or influenced by the wrong side of religious beliefs. In fact the religious intolerance is more rampant today compared to the situation in 60 s or 70 s . Let us hope and believe that the next generation will under stand the folly in this religious extremism or intolerance.

IMPORTANT FACTORS FOR SUCCESS

Posted in Uncategorized by K P Ramachandran on October 30, 2015

When my child hood friend asked me recently the most important requirements for a successful business venture from my experience, I told him the following important factors  which are essential to establish a successful venture .

Attitude

The first important factor for success in any venture is your attitude. You should have a positive attitude in any work/business you do. If you maintain a positive attitude, that will be infectious and those around you will pick up on your positive energy.

Dedication

Many of us have a lot of interests, and we would like to do something with all of those things, but until you become dedicated to one interest and make it work as business model, you will not see success you desire. Your commitment in the business is more important for its success.

Knowledge

For success in the business you lead, you should learn the tricks of the trade. You should understand the special skills and knowledge associated with that trade. This should be learnt from experience to enable you to lead others successfully.

Lead from the front.

You should tune your life style to suit your business. In fact you have to be there in front leading your team. You should always be there in the fore front shouldering responsibilities and encouraging the team. This will inspire the team and will successfully take you to your vision.

Humility

A humble leader tries to elevate everyone around him. If you are a humble leader, you have wider spheres of influence, attract better talent , inspire more confidence and earn more loyalty and respect than other leaders with ego.

I told my friend that the above factors helped me to establish my business and lead the team successfully for quite a long period.

Do not desire anything.

It is better not to desire any thing. The cause of all miseries from which we suffer is desire. If there is no desire, there is no suffering. But, we all desire for results. When we do not get desired results we feel sad or depressed.

The old proverb ” Man proposes, God disposes ” by Thomas A Kempis from the ‘Imitation of Christ ‘; and the message by Lord Krishna to Arjuna in Chapter 2.47 of Bhagavad Gita , ” you have the right to work only , but never to its fruits; let not the fruits of actions be your motive, nor let your attachment be to inaction ” are relevant here.

If you desire for results , it can bring miseries if your wishes are not complied with. When we climb stairs of success and reach at the top, we may find that the place we reached is not the one you desired. This is life. Hence, if you want to be happy do not desire any thing, be contented with what you have or what you get.

Life style diseases like Diabetes, blood pressure, back pain/neck pain are common today among youngsters. It is unfortunate that even though this can be prevented by making slight changes in life style, the present generation is not inclined to do those. As per the World Medical Council if the youngsters in this digital world do certain life style adjustments, they can prevent many such ailments including cancer.Further, this will ensure a happy and healthy life.

Exercise

In this digital life style, it is imperative that we exercise daily to nullify the bad effects of sedentary habits. The best and easy method is to walk 30 – 45 minutes at least 5 days a week. It is also necessary not to sit continuously for more than one hour at a stretch using your system or mobile. Take a break to move around for few minutes before continuing the works.

Diet

A diet with more vegetables and fruits are ideal to give your body necessary vitamins and minerals. Simultaneously, add protein foods like pulses, milk , fish or lean meat, reducing the intake of fats and carbs. Intake of sugar and salt should also be reduced , if not avoided.

Early to bed and early to rise

Early to bed , and early to rise makes a man healthy ,wealthy and wise ‘ This quote by Benjamin Franklin is famous. This habit will keep you healthy since you will have good sleep pattern once practiced. As this will give you more time in the day for your plan and activities, this makes you wealthy and wise. Further, this will increase your body resistance to diseases.                                                                                                 These small adjustments in your daily routine can change your life and make you healthy and happy.

The three envelopes

Boss, while handing over the charge to the new incumbent gave him three envelopes. The envelopes were marked 1, 2 and 3. He told the new person to open them only when he is in doubt or encounters any problems. In the first instance when he needed an answer he would open cover no.1 ; next time envelope no.2 and third time no.3.The new boss took charge and implemented his ideas/strategies to carry on the company successfully. After few months he faced problems and opened the cover no.1. ‘ Put the blame on your predecessor ‘ , it was written there. He explained accordingly to the board of Directors. He continued the works in his own style. After an year or so when he faced failures he opened cover no.2 where it was written – ‘ Start new projects ‘. He presented his strategies to the management and started some new projects to increase the revenue. This went on for some time and when he faced criticisms / problems he opened the envelope no.3 to find an answer. It read – ‘ Make another three envelopes ‘.

I miss you Ravi ( Ravindran )

I write this with great sadness over the unimaginable loss of my close friend and guide Ravindran, to renal failure yesterday. He fought a brave and strong battle for few years but the kidney failure would not allow him to get better. He took each day in stride, never really complaining, and always hoping that with regular dialysis he could get on with his life. I was amazed at his perpetual optimism even when things looked bleak.
He was a wonderful friend to me who was guiding me for over 50 years with his gentle inspiring nature. Starting from 1964 he was in my thoughts guiding, influencing and inspiring me in my activities. His approach and attitude towards his friends and relations were steady and firm always. In our 51 years of association, our relations and his attitude and friendship with me were unchanging. In times of distress, talking to him proved a great consolation. His belief in life was the importance of being authentic with people, saying what needs to be said, which made him different from others. Also I always admired his valuable and truthful advice which I will surely miss.
Only two months before we sat and chatted in his house for few hours. We were recollecting various interesting incidents since 1964 at different places.Even I was amazed at his sharp memory. We used to interact twice or thrice a month even in spite of the distance between our domicile.
I remember the words of Pandit Nehru at the sudden demise of Gandhiji – ” The light has gone out of our lives. ” Ravi was like that to me. I surely miss his guidance and inspiration.

50 years gone after that fateful accident

It was in February 1965, my college organised a tour to various holiday destinations with around 70 members in a new bus. That was my first year in that NSS College Cherthala. There were boys, girls and teachers. While returning from Madurai on our last leg of the tour , after visiting Thekkady we were travelling to Kottayam at around 7.30 pm. Some local people advised us to go in the morning as the road to Kottayam was having several hair pin bends. They cautioned the driver of the low visibility . But the driver was confident and assured to take care. Near Kuttikkanam , around 30 km from Thekkady while negotiating the 9th bend the bus lost control and fell to the side valley rolling 9 times. The students who fell out of the bus were crushed to death. Even though two of my friends who were sitting on my both sides were killed, I was inside the bus till the bus was stopped by hitting  a small teak tree. By God’s grace I was least injured. On those days, I was in a group of youngsters in our village singing bhajans in the temple under the leadership of our saint like Guru. As the communication net works were not advanced like today, the first news came thru radio was death of most of the students in the accident. My mother fainted and was inconsolable. At that time our Guru went and told her that nothing would happen to her son since the temple goddess would take care of him. This has become true and I reached home safely later. I consider that as my rebirth by the grace of God.

My Best friend

I learned to be my own best friend since I knew that there is going to be days where no one is going to be there for me but myself. Also I know, as told by a great man ” if you make friendship with yourself you will never be alone .” There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who wait any more and who always will. So I don’t worry about people from my past, there is a reason why they didn’t make it to my future.
There were times in my life when my house used to be a regular place for social gathering. This stopped once I discontinued my drinking. All friends disappeared as if they were loving to drinking rather than my friendship. The one person I am with for ever is me. My relationship with myself is eternal, so I choose to be my best friend. I choose to love and accept myself and talk to myself as I would to a beloved person in my life. I saturate all the cells in my body with love, and they become vibrantly healthy. I relate with love to all of life.
If you don’t love yourself, you will always be chasing people who don’t love you, either. Remember that it is not selfish to love yourself, take care of yourself, and to make your happiness your priority. It is necessary.

Nostalgia

It was in 1969 , exactly 45 years back I started my career in Federal Bank as a trainee. The monthly stipend was Rs.100/ which was not a paltry sum on those days. I needed only Rs.75/ to pay my monthly bill for food and stay. When I was confirmed in Bank’s rolls on 1st of January 1970, thanks to Bank Nationalization by Mrs.Indira Gandhi I got hike in pay. I fondly remember buying two pairs of shirts and trousers with my own money first time in life. The life was joyous even without mobile , TV and computers. The evening strolls/assembly  were filled with jokes, anecdotes and other interesting matters . We used to share our experiences/ family issues in such pleasant discussions. While looking back to those pleasant days I feel nostalgic. The present day facilities like mobile, TV and computers have definitely enriched our lives, but have taken away such joyous occasions. Today people seldom get time to club meets, family visits or friendly hang out.

IMPULSIVE ACTIONS/DECISIONS

Posted in Uncategorized by K P Ramachandran on October 5, 2014

Without any doubt, our emotions dictate our thoughts, intentions and decisions. But when we act on our emotions too quickly or we act on our negative emotions, we often make wrong decisions that we later repent. Our negative emotions must be handled with extreme care. Negative emotions like rage, envy or bitterness tend to spiral out of control and will result in bad decisions which affect our career / life. The following steps can control our emotions and regain rationality in any challenging situation.

  • DO NOT REACT IMMEDIATELY

Reacting immediately to our negative emotions can be a big mistake. Think overnight calmly and take decision on the next day/opportunity,  rationally.

  • GET GOOD OPINION

It is always good to get an opinion from some one you trust and are more experienced than you before taking your decision.

  • SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE

Even in the midst of emotionally upsetting moment, trust that there exists an ultimate purpose which you will come to comprehend soon. You have to use your wisdom to see the bigger picture, the pros and cons of that decision.

  • REPLACE YOUR THOUGHTS

Negative emotions tend to negative thoughts creating negative decisions. In such a situation, replace your thoughts with a different thought. Engage in a happy activity. Think of someone who can make you happy or remember an event that make you smile or go for a vacation with your beloved family members.

  • FORGIVE YOUR EMOTIONAL TRIGGER

Your emotional triggers may be your best friend, your family member or your colleague. You feel distressed when they behave strangely/ indifferently totally unexpectedly. When you forgive, you detach from resentment and the fury lingering within you. As you forgive, you will find yourself dissociating from the harsh feelings attached to your being.

It is necessary that , for success in your life or career you are able to master your emotions.
